365 Photo Project: Week 38

The creative crisis has seemingly come to close. {Well, I think -- I'm an artist, and I might stumble unintentionally into another one tomorrow or the next day, if I'm being honest.}

day256

But this latest one is stick-a-fork-in-it done.

During my much-needed break, I spent some time trying to reconnect with my passion for photography by journaling and doodling and casually snapping pictures and reflecting {thank you, Creativity Boot Camp!}.

day 257

I found that without the self-imposed pressure and rules, I really actually still do love gathering all of my captures every week.

I really enjoy the harvest reaped from the project.

day 258

And I really like learning more about my camera.

But I don't like feeling like I've failed when I miss a day -- and I seem to miss at least one day every week or two because of one thing or another.

day 259

So I've had to jump over some internal perfectionist obstacles in order to come to a place where I want to continue in this endeavor.

day 260

All in all, I've jumped and cleared the bar {just barely}, which means that I'm forging on until I capture all 365 days {even if it takes 400}.

However, if I miss a day, I'm just going to move on mentally and with the project.

day 261

That means that my captures might have a day or two in between them but still be numbered consecutively.

day 262

And that's just life right now with a husband, two small kids, a business, a side project and, well, a summer that really needs to be filled with enjoyment and activity and movement and, you know, living.

Everyday Life: Self Portrait {Bigger Picture Moment}

I have this vision:

long blades of prairie grass glowing in the twilight of late May, my own copper hair pressed against the pinkened sky, a splash of dark amid in the fullness of color.

{And trust me -- after a week of rain then two of sun, my backyard is most likely able to be listed as prairie.}

I've been mulling this capture all day -- today, this first day in a week or so since my camera has even emerged from the black confines of its bag, resting dormant under the weight of my creative slump.

But today demands the camera in so many ways -- the boys sharing their first popsicles of the summer, two small sets of lips extending sticky kisses to their aunt.

And the assignment from Creativity Boot Camp, with which I'm reemerging after taking time off right smack dab in the middle to put together the Joplin auction, demands it, too.

We are to capture ourselves.

However we want.

There are no rules.

Only to know yourself just a bit more than what you did before you started by capturing her.

I click away almost an entire day's worth of sunlight and adventure before I turn the lens on myself.

It's after the children are in bed, hubby upstairs lulling them to sleep, that I sneak out the back door quietly and stand in the last bits of light.

Setting up the camera, adjusting the lens, setting the timer, I dash through nearly calf-high weeds and grasses toward the flowering tree near the edge of the yard.

Face toward the slightest blushes of the sky, I beam while the shutter snaps.

Click.Click.Click.Click.Click.

Dart back to the camera, sift through pictures that don't match the images in my mind, I begin to readjust the focus, reposition the camera, fix the light meter and accidentally set the camera off a few times.

Annnnd repeat the darting back to the tree and trying again several times until the last bit of light edges over the horizion and my body is but a shadow on the screen.

I return to the house, resign to embrace what I've captured even though I feel like my vision is more than a little deflated -- there are photos that showcase bits of me that don't really feel like me, that are kind of stiff and planned and the lines of my body don't really line up the way I'd like them to -- a primed and posed, under-the-spot-light me that doesn't really look like me at all is what I have to show.

Until I click a little further. And I find one of the accidental self portrait taken while gauging the fading sunlight and messing with the timer and light meter --

the capture taken where I wasn't planning or looking or paying attention -- rather just living, just being.

A lesson in self-expression that couldn't have come at a better time.

Because who I am when the spotlight fades is more me than who I am poised to be when I'm clearly in the focus -- primed and ready for shoot.

And the assignment becomes clear, like a lens being turned into a fine focus.

And I see it unblurred, for what it is instead of what I think it was supposed to be.

Simple BPM

This actually turned out to be glimpse of the bigger picture through a simple moment this week, so I'm reposting it for today's link up.

Everyday Life: Just Let Go

During the second day of Creativity Boot Camp, our coach encouraged us to get out our paints and

just.let.go.

Paint whatever we wanted.

Whereever our creativity took us, we were to land there, explore.

Make a huge mess for the sake of letting go.

That's hard for a Type-A personality who likes to plan where she's going,

have a road map marked out, a path to her art that's been building in the pit of her stomach, soul.

I wondered if I even knew what "just let go" meant in terms of creation.

But we painted, nonetheless, anyway, with abandon and recklessness and spontanity.

E and me.

We made a mess, and I took my cues from his toddler movements, ventured where my paint brush felt like venturing

through swirls of turquoise

Day2

and lyrics of Copeland repeating in my head

around and 'round the cornflower blues of bright eyes.

Day2.2

And when we were finished, both of us coated in our craft physically,

the letting part of the go

finally

seemed to make itself known

through the gentle ebb of thoughts in my mind

the relaxation spread across my shoulders

the small smiles spread across my lips

Instead of wearing my art in huge tidal waves of pent-up emotion, the only trace left of the creative energy bound up tightly in my body was the paint streaking my knuckles.

***GIVEAWAY CLOSED!***
Thirty two weeks ago, I didn't even know how to use my camera.
Day 203

And while I still don't know everything about everything, I'm now at a place where even I am greatly pleased {and a little shocked} at how far I've come in such a relatively short amount of time.

day 204

But that's what {almost-daily} practice will do for me: diligence takes a spark of passion and slowly transforms it into flame.

day 205

And while I don't really have any desire to become a professional photographer because that's not my main gifting, I do enjoy capturing soul-deep shots of my boys, so I'm glad to have taken this journey.

day 206

I never would have begun the project, though, if it weren't for having just come off of Creativity Boot Camp, designed and hosted by the extremely creative and inspiration Maegan from Life Set to Words.

day 207

CBC inspired me to finally, finally call myself an artist.

And own it.

day 208

I chose to work in the medium of writing during last year's CBC, and I experienced tremendous growth as a creative writer, allowing escape from the ropes in which I'd bound myself.

day 209

The support of others on their creative journeys inspired, encouraged and pushed me to excel and go beyond my comfort zone in my writing last year.

day 210

I felt like I'd flourished, and I held onto the beauty of what I'd learned through this self expression, carrying it with me as I continued to grow as a writer during this past year.

day 211

When Maegan announced that she would again host another boot camp this May, I knew I wanted to dive back in again and swim deeper into my creative waters.

day 212

As a contributor to CBC, I've already invested a lot of heart into the course.

day 213

And I'll be adding more deposits come our start date.

day 214

I'm expecting to be stretched and challenged yet again this year. Because that's how Maegan rolls: she's again written and developed CBC to inspire artists and craftors and dreamers and creators to stretch, to recognize their strengths.

day 215

And own them.

day 216

day 217

Do you want to own your creativity? Your identity as an artist or creator or writer or photographer or painter?

day 218

Then you'll definitely want to leave me a comment here expressing what craft you'd like to develop.

day 219

Because Maegan has so graciously allowed each of the contributors to give away one COMPLIMENTARY spot in the 2011 Creativity Boot Camp.

And it's an online course -- so no travel required!

So? Which creative muscles do you want to flex? A winner will be randomly selected and announced Wednesday at 4 p.m. So you have until 3:59 CST Wednesday to enter.

Happy creating!

*Days 213, 214 and 215 were all taken the same day. I was fighting the hostile take over of my sinus cavity likely by the very subject captured in Day 215 two of the other days and didn't even think about picking up my camera. Just keeping it real. :)

Creativity Boot Camp: Registration opens tomorrow !

Sometimes my words are void of passion, just letters floating around on a page, forming sentences.

And the pictures I snap don't seem to capture, feature any emotion or depth or life.

Sometimes I have OH-SO-MUCH floating around in my head -- so much passion, so many thoughts, so much conviction -- and I just cannot unlock my brain and pull it all out in a way that resonates with my soul.

Sometimes I call it writer's block, which is really one of my ultimate frustrations because I cannot process life without writing.

Every now and then, I find myself fishing for some creative fish and pulling the line back in only to find a bare hook.

Last year's Creativity Boot Camp whipped me into some serious shape; it lifted some creative weights so I could push through those moments of writer's block. Because this kind of slump is really bad for my {mental} health.

And most, importantly, it helped me define myself as a writer, an artist, a creator.

I'll be attending Creativity Boot Camp May 15-28. And the best part {well, maybe not best, but it IS super great!} -- I don't have to board a plane to flex my creative muscles!

And it's being hosted by the ubber-talented, extremely creative, Maegan from Life Set to Words! {And that was a whole lot of exclamation points in one paragraph. Sorry.}

Also? One teeny, tiny other little thing: this year, Maegan asked some fellow artists to contribute thoughts in each of their respective areas of expertise. And I'm humbled and excited to have been part of the collaboration for 2011.

Registration opens tomorrow. If you register between April 18 and 22, the cost is only $39, and half of the money benefits Show Hope!

CBC: Spring Training

So how was that for awesome news!

And at the end of this week, I get to share one more really fun thing. Trying not to burst until then. :)
