Everyday Life: Arrivals and Departures

This past week has been filled with departures and arrivals, all starting with us packing up our suitcases and heading to Midway to pick up my grandfather, who flew in from Fort Myers to help make us make the trek down to Fort Myers via automobile.

In the moments before John left for week that morning of our departure, I lingered a few extra moments in our embrace and whispered I loved him an extra time. {Even after six years of marriage, being apart for four days still chokes me up.}

Dinner snuggle

Rest stop

The boys and I spent the next three days in a series of more arrivals and departures, celebrating loudly and vibrantly at each hotel stop for the night before finally {finally!} making it to Fort Myers. The littles literally bounded into the soft hugs of my awaiting grandmother ...

But because life with boys isn't complete until we've had at least one major heart palpitation moment {apparently} we had an unexpected departure via ambulance with an arrival at the local children's hospital just an hour after arriving at my grandparent's house.

Thankfully, with E firmly snuggled in my exhausted arms, just hours later we left the ER when the doctor deemed E's lungs clear after a scary choking incident. As I cuddled him to sleep, I lingered longer than normal, just listening to his rhythmic breathing, thanking God for His careful watch.

The next night John's plane was scheduled to land around 11:15 p.m., but a snowstorm in Chicago delayed his departure ... and he didn't end up arriving here into the warmth of Florida air and my arms until 3:30 a.m. I pulled my tired body from bed when I heard the door creak open and shut, shuffled over to my exhausted husband and lingered in an embrace longer than I normally would when he walks through the door after a long day at work.

And, this week, in this drought of arrivals and departures, I store in my heart the sweetness that was hardpressed from the past week's tensions, let it drip onto my tastebuds, coating my senses with the most succulent juices life squeezes from the ripest fruits of love and time spent together.

Bigger Picture Moments: Love in Little Moments

The sun had long hidden itself behind clouds in the horizon.

Sunset

E was squawking in the backseat, totally discontented with having been carseat-bound for five hours and G, although moderately contented, kept hollering that he was car sick {which means he's sick of being the car and not the notorious threat it often means when a poor soul utters it from the back seat}.

My grandfather was at the helm driving us through the dark hills of  Tennesssee, I thought the last of our sanity might slip through our fingers when after we'd already stopped twice in about ten minutes G announced:

"Mommy! I have to poop."

At that moment in time, I admit, I was totally thinking of my kids as inconveniences to be managed: I was tired of being in the car, tired of fielding questions, tired of crazy drivers swerving over the lines, tired of E crying out in agony every time his cup was emptied of bunnies. I was just plain and simple tired. And their needs were just piling up into a heap of overwhelming my tired brain.

In that moment in time, too, my grandpa looked over at me, equally tired of all the above, and let out a long "oooooohhhh myyyyy" before bursting into a nonsensical grin and laughing.

Despite my best tired intentions, I couldn't hold back my own goofy smiling and giggles began slipping out of my mouth until I was full out laughing at the absolute insanity of making another stop in so little time.

"What?!" What's funny?" G asked. "Poop is NOT funny! We don't do potty talk and laugh about potty words!"

As we laughed, he started giggling, too, until we were all laughing as we pulled into yet another rest stop.

Because despite G's preschool rules of "no potty talk and laughing at potty words" that we've adopted as a family guideline, in that moment, on that night, not only was the potty talk funny,  it was desperately needed to bring us back to that place of love and away from the downward spiral of frustration.

{Today we're making the last leg of our journey to Fort Myers from Valdosta, GA. If you think of us, please lift us up to the Father for continued travel safety and finding the humor in needing to poop.}

Each Thursday, we come together to share the harvest of intentional living by capturing a glimmer of the bigger picture through a simple moment.  And to spice it up a little, during the month of FEBRUARY, we'll be reflecting upon the simple yet lovely gifts that are sprinkled throughout our lives.

Road Trip: And we're off!

Today, Melissa and I leave for Relevant 11 with baby G in tow {deep, huge breathe in and exhale}.

We'll be traveling in the style and comfort of our Chevy Traverse all the way to Harrisburg, PA for four days of good conversation, good friends and good moments of growth through listening to God speak to our hearts through speakers.

I was wondering, though, as we journey out today, would you pray for us?

Would you pray for travel mercies, safety for our families, open hearts and open ears? We would so appreciate it!

 In fact, Lenae would appreciate your prayers, too! That's right; three of us from Bigger Picture Blogs are going to The Relevant Conference! And we'd love to take you with us!

But since we can't fit you in our suitcases, we'll have to take you with in a virtual capacity!

Be sure you are following us as we tweet out gems from our trip and truths gleaned:
@HyacynthW
@PBinmyHair
@JustLenae

Hope you enjoy Relevant through our eyes, friends!

Oh, and this, too!: Melissa and I had a great kick off last night with a live tweet-up for those of you in the Chicagoland area so as to rally votes for Marissa of The Mothers Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes . It was wonderful to relax with free mini massages, a complimentary cocktail and good conversation before a 12 hour car ride across the country with a {very cute} baby.

Would you mind voting for Marissa of The Mothers Milk Bank? I will be telling you all about why milk banks are so important for community health later today, but in the meantime, would you give her and the milk bank your {quick and easy} vote? Please and thank you!

Disclosure: Our trip to Relevant is being generously sponsored by Chevy’s Driving the Midwest who has given us a tank of gas and a Traverse to get there. Our ride is also being fueled by Kawa Japanese and Asian Cuisine, Dr. Reena Jacobs of The Healing Groves, Curves of Lake CountyBigger Picture Blogs and Little Lake County, each of whome have provided one tank of gas for the trip. All opinions expressed are our own.
